As we walk through medieval streets, churches, towers and squares, you’ll discover how history, architecture and everyday life are connected in ways you probably wouldn’t notice on your own.
What To Expect
We’ll start with the story of salt, which shaped Pag long before the town you see today was built. With views over the salt pans and towards the Old Town of Pag, you’ll discover why the inhabitants left their medieval settlement behind and built a completely new town in the 15th century.
As we follow the waterfront, we’ll see Pag’s historic salt warehouses and discover the story of Juraj Dalmatinac, the renowned architect connected with the planning of the new town. We’ll also visit one of the surviving towers and sections of the old town walls before heading into the historic centre.
There, we’ll explore Pag’s carefully planned streets, churches, monastery, main square and Rector’s Palace, uncovering the stories behind the buildings rather than simply ticking landmarks off a list.
We’ll also discover Pag lace and other local traditions, before finishing back by the waterfront with stories about Pag cheese, lamb and island life.
And because this is my hometown, I’ll share local recommendations throughout the walk, from museums and exhibitions to places for food, gelato, local products and anything else worth discovering while you’re here.
Meet Your Guide
Hi, I’m Tena, a licensed tour guide, archaeologist and travel creator who grew up in the town of Pag.
After more than ten years working in archaeology, including underwater archaeology, living abroad and travelling extensively, I realised that the stories I enjoy telling the most are often the ones that never make it into guidebooks.
Growing up in Pag gave me the chance to experience the town not only as a visitor, but as someone who knows its history, traditions and everyday life from the inside. Archaeology taught me to look beyond what is immediately visible and ask why. Why was something built here? Why does it look the way it does? What does it tell us about the people who lived here?
That’s exactly how I designed this tour.
Rather than simply pointing out monuments, I want to help you understand the stories behind them and see Pag through the eyes of someone who has called it home for a lifetime.
My goal isn’t simply to show you Pag. It’s to help you understand it.
